Barette Widell

BIOGRAPHY

Barette Vance Widell, a native of Laguna Hills, California, began her dance training at the age of three at Saddleback Dance Center in California. In the following years, Barette had the opportunity to train with such notable teachers as Cynthia Gregory and Ann Marie D'Angelo. In 1998, at age 14 and after attending The School of American Ballet summer program for two consecutive summers, she was offered a scholarship to attend the year-round program at SAB, where she danced for five years. During this time, she also completed summer programs on scholarship at Pacific Northwest Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Houston Ballet, and Miami City Ballet.

Ms. Widell became an Apprentice with The Pennsylvania Ballet in September of 2003, and was promoted to Corps de Ballet in August 2005, and Soloist for the 2008-2009 Season. Also in 2008, Barette was featured in Philadelphia Magazine along with Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, and Philadelphia Phillies 2nd baseman Chase Utley as one of the most influential people in Philadelphia for 2008.

In 2010, Barette received the title of the Janis and Stephen Goodman Soloist Dancer and was also selected as one of the featured “Four Swans” dancers in the Darren Aronofsky feature film “Black  Swan” starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Winona Ryder, and Vincent Cassel. In August of 2010, along with DeSean Jackson, Barette was awarded the Mentor Me “Community Impact Award” for her charitable work with underprivileged children

FIRST THING THAT COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU SAY “CAPEZIO”

To me Capezio is the “Iconic name in Dance”. I also think of  Shoes, Great Quality Products as well as Capezio’s amazing heritage and  unparalleled commitment to dance.

FAVORITE CAPEZIO ITEM

Fizzions —  I Love my Fizzions and I wear them to Company class every day. They truly allow me to feel the floor and work through my feet when at barre. I also love my Capezio leggings--I wear them with my leotards and also around town. They are by far the most comfortable and flattering leggings that I have ever worn.

BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR OTHER DANCERS

Dance for yourself! If this is really what you want, you will need to put in a lot of hard work but in the end it is worth every minute and ounce of energy that you give it.  Don’t give up. When someone tells you no, use it as fuel, and work ten times harder. Believe in yourself; believe in your family; believe in love; believe that anything can happen. That’s why I have a tattoo on my wrist that says ‘Believe’ – That is my motto and I truly feel that if you believe in yourself and work hard you can accomplish anything and everything!

UNUSUAL FACT/LOVE/HABIT/GOAL/ABILITY THAT PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW

I love to write poetry and I am most often inspired by memorable events in my life.  I also love fashion and am currently working on a blog about fashion and social events in Philadelphia. I feel fortunate that I have been able to balance my professional life along with my personal life. In November of 2011 I married the man of my dreams, Christopher Widell, in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico in what proved to be a fairy tale wedding.  We have three dogs together and look forward to building a family in the future.

My dance inspiration is my maternal grandmother. She danced for the Royal Ballet and even though she passed before I was born, I feel a part of her lives on in me. She is my good luck charm and I pray to her before each and every performance.
