Since 2009, The Capezio A.C.E Awards have increasingly become a prestigious platform for choreographers to present their work. With winners such as Travis Wall and Peter Chu, the Awards are very competitive, and highly regarded.

The choreographic showcase is unique in that it helps to skyrocket choreographers’ careers by enabling them to present their own show. Three prize winners are chosen at each competition, and these talented three receive a production budget to go towards their very own evening-length show in New York City, produced by Break the Floor. The winner receives a $15,000 production budget, the first runner up receives $5,000 and the second runner up receives $3,000.

“We wanted to give young and up-and-coming choreographers a platform to showcase their work to top choreographers, dance teachers and just the industry in general. That’s the main idea behind the competition,” said Katy Malone of Break the Floor Productions. “If they win they get the opportunity to go on and produce and choreograph a full-length show. That’s something a lot of choreographers have never done before, so that’s a really amazing opportunity!” she added.

Break the Floor and Capezio want to support up-and-coming choreographers by providing them with this unique opportunity.

“We’re trying to cultivate the next generation of amazing choreographers, and we’ve gone on to hire most of the people that have won because we’ve loved what they’ve done. So it’s our way of keeping our finger on the pulse of the industry and helping those choreographers get their work out there, because it is just so expensive to rent a theater and do everything yourself. At the Capezio A.C.E. Awards night alone you get your work in front of 2,200 people! That’s unprecedented in our history,” said Malone.

Applications are now open for the 2014 Capezio A.C.E. Awards, which will be held on August 2 at Dance Teacher Summit in NYC. Interested choreographers can submit their videos at Dancemedia.com, with applications closing on May 28.

Last year’s winner, Erica Sobol, is currently putting the finishing touches on her full-length show, funded by her winnings at the Capezio A.C.E Awards, and for the first time in the Awards’ history the winner’s work will be presented in Los Angeles instead of New York.

“Erica Sobol is going to do her show in L.A. on May 18 and 19. She has an amazing group of nine male dancers, so since she needed to use those nine dancers, we all talked and realized L.A. would be the better place for her to present her work. This will be our first show in L.A. for a Capezio A.C.E Awards winner,” explained Malone.

Like previous years, the Capezio A.C.E. Awards Winners Festival will still be held after Dance Teacher Summit at the Ailey Citigroup Theater on August 4-6. Last year’s runner-up choreographers Andre Kasten, Lindsay Nelko and Jacob Jonas will all present shows.

Thrilled with the success of the Awards to date, Malone shares: “This is definitely becoming a prestigious thing that people want to be a part of. We’ve had people from Alvin Ailey, Broadway and Cedar Lake submit work! There’s just so much talent out there and we just want to make sure that everyone has a voice and a chance to be seen.”

And with the support of Capezio, Break the Floor is able to make the Awards a reality. “When we first started we wanted to put the event in association with a name that we trusted, so obviously we went to Capezio,” explained Malone. “We’ve always had a great working relationship with Capezio. Everyone knows who they are and they’ve been around for so long. They have such loyalty too; you know they’re always going to be there behind you.”

With over 200 submissions each year, just being chosen to present work as part of the lucky 15 choreographers highlighted at the competition is an honor, but there’s always the chance that you could leave with some prize money, so why not submit? Now’s the time to have your work be seen, so make sure to get your submission in before May 28. We hope to see you at the 2014 Capezio A.C.E. Awards!
